A Cumbrian Schools Poetry Anthology

Lives turned upside down...

In March 2020, the government announced a nationwide stay-at-home order, or lockdown. In unprecedented measures, not seen since the second world war, businesses were forced to close, public transport ground to a halt, and schools and universities across the UK closed their doors to students.

As the nation struggled to keep key workers operational, more than 8 million children began homeschooling. Living rooms and bedrooms became classrooms; children were unable to see friends and family. Some had few opportunities to go outside at all.

The Lockdown Anthology

Children (and teachers!) from primary schools across Cumbria were invitedto write a poem about their own experiences of lockdown.

The result is an anthology of almost 200 poems, providing an amazing insight into the lives of children stuck at home during the Covid-19 pandemic. Of course, some are frustrated, some bored; many miss their friends and families. There is, however, an overwhelming positivity that reflects the incredible resilience of young children whose world was turned upside down overnight.
